The Problem with the Pakistani Army

The Pakistani Army is a major stakeholder in the India-Pakistan rivalry. Pakistani Army generals have retained a central position in Pakistan’s chequered politics because of this India factor.

Thanks to India, Pakistan has a giant defence economy with proceeds benefitting Pakistan’s generals and those linked to them.

While Pakistan is a country at least outwardly, in reality it is an army with a state, rather than a state with an army.

When I first went to Chechnya we were engaged in search missions in the southern part of the republic. Basically this meant we would surround villages suspected of harboring insurgents. As our armour rolled through, we would usually drop in by helicopter. Once in the village, half of the unit would provide cover while the other half searched houses for weapons, wanted faces, etc etc. During these operations we often came across these ornate silverware pots with a long spout and Arabic letters engraved on them.

Thirty journalists dead in the first election related violence in the Philippines which made a province under the state of emergency. The November 23 Maguindanao massacre was also the first violence related to the 2010 national elections.

Maguindanao, in Southern Mindanao Island is one of the poorest provinces in the Philippines and is governed by the Ampatuan family, being the members of the clan holding most and the highest of the political positions in the province. This being the case, Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu of the opposing political family, planned to challenge the Ampatuan family in the 2010 gubernatorial race. After showing interest in the position held by the Ampatuans, it is said that’s when Mangudadatu started to receive death threats.
